2014 Legislative Session Opens With Bills to Increase Protections Against Sex Offenders
Tuesday marked the beginning of Florida's 2014 Legislative Session. On the day usually reserved for speeches and ceremonies, the Senate broke with tradition and went right to work. After the Governor's State of the State address, the Senate reconvened to vote on legislation to protect Florida's most vulnerable citizens from sex offenders.
All 40 Senators stood together in bi-partisan support of this crucial legislative package that includes SB 494, which I sponsored, as well as SB 522 by Senator Denise Grimsley (R-Sebring), SB 524 by Senator Eleanor Sobel (D-Hollywood), SB 526 by Senator Rob Bradley (R-Fleming Island), and SB 528 by Senator Greg Evers (R-Baker).
Together, these bills address some of the cracks in Florida's criminal justice system and aim to keep sexual offenders off our streets and away from our children. The legislation gives law enforcement and our communities the tools to be prepared, informed, and engaged in the fight against predators.
As we opened the legislative session on Tuesday, I was honored to be joined by friends from Cape Coral on the floor of the Senate.
Getting to see faces from Southwest Florida during our time in Tallahassee is always the best part of the legislative session. I look forward to visiting with many of you during the 60 days!
