For those marketing a product or service, nothing sounds so good to the ears as the phrase, “Sold out.” Sold out says it all. It says there is no more available. It says that all that is available is being utilized. It says that as much or as many as are possible to serve are being served.
But, you know what? The Lord doesn’t necessarily think of being ‘sold out’ in the ways that we do. I most often read in God’s Word that He is more interested in quality rather than quantity. The Lord is much more interested in your internal condition than He is your outward expression.
Matt 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
When Jesus taught the most famous sermon known to man, (the sermon on the mount,) one of His summary thoughts had to do with the concept of a ‘sell out.’ His teaching was that being sold out has to do with priority. What is “first and foremost” is more important in the eyes of the Lord than, “how much?”
When I trust God, and understand how He works, I become far less concerned with outward signs which are so captivating to the world. Does big indicate success? Maybe. Maybe not.
In Mark 12, Jesus sat observing those who placed their offerings into the treasury. A poor widow came by and placed 2 mites in the box, which is equivalent to 2/10ths of a penny. Jesus’ response? Mark 12:43…"Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; 44 for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood."
The question we all must ask ourselves is what comes first in our lives? Numbers don’t impress the Lord very much. The Lord is concerned with how much of me belong to Him. The promise is when I am sold out to Him – I find He has always been sold out to me!
This is the message of the cross.
